Lewis Cancer Research UK Committee

The Cancer Research UK Committee in Lewis was established in 1975 and in the last 32 years has collected £500,000 for research into cancer.

In 1975 not many people survived cancer, but it is a different story today as the latest figures show that there are now a million people alive and well who have been successfully treated for cancer in the last ten years alone. They owe their lives to better treatments, new drugs and early detection of the disease - all products of research.
Almost £30 million has been spent in Scotland by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in the last financial year and this has been shared out to doctors and scientists working in the laboratories and universities of Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dundee. Two groundbreaking studies revealed new information on breast and bowel cancer genetics, as well as the tremendous development of different kinds of chemotherapy drugs.

In 2007 the Isle of Lewis Committee of CRUK won a prestigious award for fundraising in the community. These awards, known as the 'Flame of Hope' Awards, are considered to be the "Oscars" of the CRUK annual events and it is a great honour to win one. To achieve this, the committee had to show innovation and flair with new fundraising ideas along with substantially increasing their annual income. The equivalent of £2.57 was raised for every man, woman and child in the Isle of Lewis. This could only be achieved by the wonderful support and generosity of the community.

Last years Womens Cancer Challenge collected £18,000 from 394 participants - an incredible achievement. So let's see if we can make the 2008 event even bigger and better. A big thank you to all those who take part. Cancer Research UK is now prepared to commit itself to a new vision - "Together we can beat Cancer".
